Wildflower Essences from Southern Alberta (#yyc’s) in August

by Renee Lindstrom, GCFP–Living in Natures Love Lifestyles insideawareness.com

Time was shorter than I hoped  to pick some wildflowers to infuse into flower essences from the Farm meadows in the Eastern Slopes of Southern Alberta (#yyc’s).  We had traveled to offer a Women’s Retreat and I had a desire to create from the land while present there.

On walks before our offering I noticed many gorgeous wildflowers blooming that would have potential for medicines and essences.  I have added a link for those interested in the wildflowers of this region below.  In the following picture are some of the flowers picked for the center of the labyrinth that was built facing the Rocky Mountains located between B.C. and Alberta (the great divide).

On the open meadows of the farm cattle roamed.  Mom’s and their babies curious at first of our arrival and comings and going.  As I built the labyrinth they appeared over the rise and hung their heads over the fence to observe what I was doing.  For a few days walking the labyrinth they would come by to observe us with curiosity and then showed up to watch our Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement sessions outdoors!  It was fun to look up and see a row of cattle squeezed together to get a better view of us.  We happened to be inside the fence and they the onlookers!

Infusing Flowers & Water to make Essences

by Renee Lindstrom, GCFP – Living in Natures Love Lifestyles @insideawareness.com

Infusing water with flowers on a warm and sunny day is fun and after spending an afternoon in the sun you have a wonderful botanical essence.  The properties, taste and fragrance of the flowers are infused into the water creating wonderful soul healing waters.

Creating Flower Essences

These water infused essences can be enjoyed in the moment or one can bottle these flower essences.  These bottled essences can then be used anytime one needs a mental or emotional lift.

It all begin’s with infusing the water with flowers on a warm sunny day.  Here are the initial  steps for creating flower essences.

Step one – Gather materials for making flower essences:

  • Bowl
  • Garden Flowers (grown naturally with no herbicides or pesticides)
  • Water – living in Greater Victoria we are lucky enough to have wonderful potable water without buying it.   I infuse our potable water using the sun’s solar energy in three ways; colour, stones, flowers, leaves and roots.  The sun purifies it and these methods create a living water.  I would use water that I have used infused with minerals or colour to make flower essence.  Using colour infused water I would consider the best colour for the purpose of the essence I hope to experience.
  • Sun

Step two – Picking  fresh garden flowers:

  • Best time

The best time to pick flowers to infuse is after the dew has evaporated and before the sun is too hot and high in the sky.  I have heard the general time to pick flowers by is noon, however in our area the sun can be too hot by 11 a.m.  Therefore it is going to be unique to your area and the patterns of the sun.

  • Pick one species of flower for making ‘mother essences’

To create a mother essence choose one type of flower per bowl of water that you will infuse them in. Combining flower essences to create a remedy happens in final steps.

  • How to pick flowers for essences

When picking your flowers for infusing try to make sure you are not touching the flower with your fingers.  Pick from underneath the flower.

  • Where to pick your flowers

Most of the flowers can come from you own garden where you know without a doubt what has been used to grow them.  It is best to have flowers that you know have been grown naturally and not  sprayed or grown in chemicals.  In Victoria proper we are lucky that our Municipality has stopped using chemicals and there are many community gardens one can pick from.  The one thing that must be considered is animals in the area.

When picking outside of my garden I use white vinegar and water to rinse the flowers first before making essences.  I use:

1/4 cup white vinegar to a sink of cool water

I let the flowers fall into the water, gently slosh them around and strain them out with strainer.  All without touching them with my fingers.

Step three:  Adding the flowers to a bowl or glass jar in the sun

Once you pick and clean your flowers place them in your container of water and set them in a sunny place that won’t be block from the sun.  Leave them in the sun for 3 or more hours to fully infuse.

Step four:  Enjoy infused water and/or create bottle essences

Once in the sun for three or more hours, enjoy the warm flower infusion for your tea break, save as fresh flavoured water or use as a ‘mother flower essence’ to create bottled essences.

3 Steps to Bottling your own Flower Essences

by Renee Lindstrom, GCFP – Living in Natures Love Lifestyles @insideawareness.com

Mother Flower Essence

Preserving a ‘mother flower essence’

The process of bottling flower essences is similar to creating homeopathic remedies.  In homeopathic’s the original base material goes through a grinding, dilution and succession process to create a remedy that only uses the energy of the original base material.  Preserving flower essences begins with infusing flowers and water in the solar energy of the sun.  A couple of drops of this ‘mother essence’ is then added to a brandy and water combination that is described later in post.   This infusion becomes the base note for bottling  this flower species essence.  The similarity to  homeopathic remedies is  the energetic imprint that is the focus in homeopathic process is the same essential energetic focus of the flower and sun infused water.  The difference is the flowers are not mashed, they are infused.  The flower essences are not pounded as in homeopathy, drops are used.  However they both use a dilution process.

Here are the steps to creating a base note Flower Essence for making Flower Essences.

Step one:  Gather the materials

  • 2 or more 1 oz amber/cobalt bottles with droppers
  • 2 drops Flower Essence water to make bottle of mother essence
  • Brandy (or vinegar – I recommend wine vinegar)
  • Water – living in Greater Victoria we are lucky enough to have wonderful potable water without buying it.   I infuse our potable water using the sun’s solar energy in three ways; colour, stones, flowers, leaves and roots.  The sun purifies it and these methods create a living water.  I would use water that I have used infused with minerals or colour to make flower essence.  If using colour infused water I would consider the best colour for the purpose of the essence I hope to experience.
  • Labels

Step 2 – Making the ‘Mother Flower Essence’ of  your Flower Essences

Fill your coloured 1 oz bottle with just under 1/2 oz of Brandy and just under 1/2 oz of water.  .  Take 2 drops of  Flower Essence water and add into the brandy and water in your 1 oz bottle.  Gently jostle your 1 oz bottle.  This becomes your Mother Essence.

You now have a Base Flower Essence for future remedies or blends.

Step 3 – Creating a Flower Essence product bottle

To make a product bottle you will need a 1 oz coloured bottle filled with brandy.  Take two drops from your ‘Mother Essence from step 2 and add this to 1 oz bottle of brandy.  Add the dropper cap to seal the bottle and jostle bottle gently.  You now have a bottle to use for taking drops or you can add this essence to others to create combined essences.  Make sure you add your label describing the flower essence.
